Dr. Judith K. Werner met Mark Clifton in 1998 when he started dating her daughter, Nancy. The next year, he discovered a lump in his testicle, which was quickly determined to be cancerous. He underwent surgery and chemotherapy and appeared to be fine.

Mark and his loved ones couldn’t have known this event, traumatic in itself, was only the start of a long series of life-threatening medical problems.

Mark and Nancy married. They had a scare in 2001 when a mass developed in Mark’s chest, but after extensive surgery removed the growing tissue, it was diagnosed as benign.

The couple had two children—a son and daughter. Mark’s career went well, and two dogs joined the family. Mark experienced a second form of cancer, more chemo, and a brief, shining moment of peace and health. Then another cancerous mass cost the young man a lung and led to further severe health complications, culminating in a massive stroke at age forty-one.

This is Mark’s astonishing story, chronicling the efforts of eleven different physicians, Mark’s family, and Mark himself to beat the odds. It’s about psychological and emotional hardship, pain, and suffering. But ultimately, it’s about Mark and his incredible resilience.

I don’t know the author personally, but the subject of this story, Mark, has been a “gaming buddy” of mine since about page 25-30 in the book. Needless to say, I’ve followed his story in real time for a while. One thing I’ve said time and again is that someone should write a book – this is one story that begs to be told. Thankfully, Dr. Werner took the initiative to do so.

The book is a well-written and approachable account of Mark’s legendary saga. The author’s style flows well and is very easy to read, despite the sometimes complex topics. When she does incorporate the medical terminology necessary, she also explains it in easy-to-understand language. I thought the excerpts from the doctor’s reports were a genius way to capture the overwhelming and terrifying “WTF” that cancer patients and their families feel upon receiving difficult, and often very bad news.

The chapters are short with frequent, natural break points...assuming you can put the book down. There are so many twists and turns in Mark’s journey that you feel compelled to turn the page to see what goes wrong next and how he could possibly overcome. Anyone who has been through, or seen a loved one go through, a medical crisis knows how that feels. “There’s always a ‘but’,” as my wife likes to say. But I can guarantee you’ve never seen anything quite like this.

Mark’s wife, Nancy, plays a prominent role in the book without stealing the spotlight from Mark. She really has been amazing, and the author strikes a good balance that keeps the focus on Mark while still paying tribute to the trials of his number one caregiver. The emotional roller coaster is implicitly present without morphing into a pretentious, in-your-face sob story. It’s another example of the author mirroring Mark’s essence in the way she tells the story that I very much appreciate. He is never “woe is me”, and neither is this book.

I know that parts of Mark’s story have been captured in medical journals and in local news reports, or passed on by word of mouth, but I’m elated that this book finally brings his full story to a wider audience. My wife (and I) have used Mark as inspiration through her own battle with cancer, and I hope that someone else can find strength in his uncanny resilience and tenacious commitment to beating the odds.

Even if you aren’t in this unenviable position, his story is still an impressive example of patience and perseverance that will convince you to take a deep breath and admit just how trivial your own everyday frustrations really are.

ReMarkable The Grit and Grace of Mark Clifton eBook Dr Judith K Werner Reviews

I received this book last Friday, and I finished it on Sunday. I could not put it down! Mr. Clifton is indeed remarkable, as is his entire family. This is a story of resilience and tenacity. It is also a story of hope and determination. I highly recommend it!
I feel like I am part of this family from reading this book. When reading the story of this amazing fight for life, I felt like I was right there with them. My heart poured out for not only Mark but for Nancy and the kids. Dr. Werner is an amazing person for the way she wrote this book. I kept google close to me so I could visualize a better picture of the some of the procedures. I definitely learned a lot.

Thank you Dr. Werner for sharing your family and this amazing story! May God keep wrapping his arms around the entire family.

I know the author but after reading this story I felt like I knew the entire family. I loved the book. It was well written and I loved the short chapters.
I was heartbroken for this young man having gone through so much but was inspired by his patience and positive attitude. Having the support of
his family and pulling together got them through this difficult time. The title "Remarkable" is perfect for this book.
I am a neighbor of Dr. Werners and through visiting in our front yards, I knew she was writing a book. She said she felt compelled to write the story of her son-in-law and what he had gone through. Never could I have imagined the magnitude of what her family was enduring. She was right--this is a story that needs telling. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I was humbled. The strength and positivity of this family is an example that all should aspire to.

The book catches your attention from the first chapter and keeps it to the last page. There is always something just around the corner. The book was easy reading and easy to understand, despite some medical terminology. Dr. Werner explained the diagnosis and procedures in language that lay people could easily understand. Even though Mark's case has made several medical journals, and not to downplay the severity of the illness or the medical miracles that have kept him alive, it is the perseverance, resiliency, and determination of this man that impressed me the most. In the face of overwhelming odds, and sometimes unknown medical territory, Mark never lost his positive attitude, his will to live, or his sense of humor. This review would not be complete without kudos to his wife Nancy, who sacrificed herself and her time, kept the children functioning as normally as possible, all while offering the support system that Mark needed. Without her, I doubt Mark would have done near as well. Other family members, including Dr. Werner, spent enormous amounts of time easing the burdens that a family with a life-threatening illness faces.

If there is a lesson to be learned from this book, it is that nothing is impossible, so don't give up--ever! I highly recommend this book, not only for the story itself, but for the lessons learned. The book causes one to take pause and reflect on the many blessings that are often taken for granted and overlooked in our daily lives.
